Well. It's one of those live life long enough moments.
Litigation entertainer Nancy Grace has been summoned to sit for deposition in the Melinda Duckett case. With cameras rolling.
Duckett--just 21 years old at her passing--committed suicide after the airing of an interview with Grace in the disappearance of her 2 year old son, Trenton.. (Nancy Grace Goes to Court, 11/21/2006).
Her legal team spent most of Tuesday attempting to keep cameras out of the courtroom, but per TMZ, a judge has ruled for videotape of the deposition. Third party access will be made available only through the courts.
(...)
The judge said since the parents' lawyer agreed not to release the video to third parties without court approval, there was no need to address "the evils" Grace complained of -- that "disclosure of the videotape of Ms. Grace's deposition" was designed to "harass, embarrass and intimidate Ms. Grace and corrupt the jury pool." (TMZ, 1/27/10).
One graceless shadow concern is left unlisted. CBS is shopping yet another syndicated show for the Grace during financial times where local station managers are oft sighted lifting green room sofa cushions in the search for loose change. Grace will take on the role of mediator in Swift Justice , "...resolv(ing) conflicts between participants, the same way other TV judges do, and her arbitration decisions will be binding." (NYT, 1/25/10).
Scary.
Although bad press is often considered ratings gold in our seesaw value of a society, any finding of responsibility in the Duckett suicide could prove the jump shark of all time bad form. The 90 per cent of the market signed up for a bit of Swift J could quite possibly bail once that remix of Nancy G Depoooo raises the roof on You Tube.
Nancy is scheduled to give it up in Atlanta this Thursday.
Stay tuned for the cell phone video.

Nancy is one of the most disgusting "entertainers" on TV, with the possible exception of Bill O'. If she ends up doing this other show you talked about it just goes to show how low our society has sunk. We do not want to have to take the time to educate ourselves but want someone else to feed us the "facts" in an entertaining way. It no longer matters if actual truth is on the agenda or not. God help us all.
I agree. :(
While this comment is not about Nancy Grace (who gives a damn anyway, she did it to herself), I thought it might be beneficial to pass this along.
The following 2 paragraphs were found on an article at Sex Offender Issues:
------------------------
Officials in California have changed their position in the past year; instead of saying that homeless sex offenders pose a threat to public safety, they are saying that Jessica's Law poses a threat to public safety. Instability, they say, increases the likelihood that repeat crimes will be committed. Now that the causal link has been established, which steps this budget-strapped state should take next is an entirely different question.
It's a complex issue, and it will be interesting to see how things take shape in the coming months. While immediate steps should be taken to see that the public is protected, it's important to note that not every convicted sex offender poses a threat after his or her release from prison. Connecting former inmates with decent and stable housing is necessary for both protecting the public from the threat of recidivism and allowing those who have served their time to move on with their lives.

Within these 2 paragraphs are the KEY to making our communities and our children safe once again.
Click my name above and you can read the original article in it's entirety.
NO RESTRICTIONS AT ALL. Violent offenders shouldn't be around the public at all if they can't keep their violence to themselves. Actual TRUE child molesters (of which there are very few) can be restricted.
These people need to be told to go fuck themselves.
Maybe instead of being a nation of laws we should be a nation of common sense.
Excellent post Book. Vox, common sense seems to be in very short supply today. We seem to have traded it in for hatred, looking for a whipping boy, blame, and magical thinking. OOPS I forgot to mention financial and political gain.
Our government does not need to be 1000' behind what the professionals have been saying for several years. If common sense does not do it for you then let’s use research...and gosh...they both say the same thing!!! Imagine that! Someday this will all just be a bad memory. It will be remembered as a very bad time in America, when constitutional rights meant nothing, millions of US citizens rights and way of life was taken away from them, because we could. It will be remembered as a time when lies won over truth, when, for a group of people, darkness overcame the light. But remember, this IS AMERICA. We will win this fight. Our children depend on it. Those self same children who hate filled hysterical people use as an excuse to pass laws that do not work and have been PROVEN ineffective and dangerous, will be finally made safer as we pass laws that make sense and are effective, laws that PREVENT sexual abuse as much as it punishes the ones who do abuse. I am just so sorry for the millions of Americans who are living in THIS time of darkness who have to be the ones to keep pushing that light, keeping those truths alive even in the face of ridicule. I know there are brave politicians out there. I know there are those who still have respect for the truth and for the Constitution of America and the oaths they took when they took office. It won't happen today or tomorrow, but it WILL HAPPEN! We must keep the faith and keep on lighting those candles. Hey, look at where we are now, not only did they stop burning witches, but you are even allowed to be one now!
Someday, you will be able to pay your debt to society to the crime you committed and be allowed to rejoin and contribute to society.
I pray for you all and for our leaders and law enforcement often.
Book- you just keep on writing and presenting the truth. Vox you keep on telling it like it is in your own special way.
Politicians- wake up and smell the court challenges to these laws that are being won...even at the state Supreme Court levels.
Public- educate yourself in the truth and you can demand your public officials make REAL laws that protect our precious children as they should be protected.
these laws came about threw mis info spread threw the media, the media got their info from pol's who got their info from non profits who "lobbied" for the laws, most of the non profits are 501c3's and are not to lobby for laws or give money for or to any pol but the IRS dosn't go after them unless someone complains ,there is a complaint form on the irs site have fun
I couldn't not leave this post without a response to the last comment above.
Anonymous, I do appreciate the information about making a complaint to the IRS about the Non-Profit 501c3's. I thank your for that bit of knowledge, and it's useful.
HOWEVER, It's the LAWMAKERS (aka pol's) who are responsible for this Holocaust. Responsible Representatives "would have taken the time to study the findings of the professionals" prior to making their laws.
If you check, you will find that the Adam Wash Act was voted on behind closed doors. There was no debate about the issue, and the professionals were not consulted via studies. The bill was just passed and made into law.
Next thing you hear/see is news stories about this new act the politician's voted for and the President signs it into law.
If studies were done PRIOR the bill being passed, there MAY have been something constructive made that would protect society.
Instead, Politician's took this as an opportunity to GET A VOTE. It wasn't shortly after the passage of that bill, that I read about a politician saying they did not care if Sex Offenders had any rights....and the persecution started.
So let's not forget that it may have been non-profits doing the lobbying however, the politician's (ALL OF THEM STATE AND FEDERAL) were responsible to make an "INFORMED" decision prior to any further passage bills.
That's what we elect them for is to represent our interest and "govern responsibly". That's how they get re-elected, by doing a good job of managing our state. Not to slam a class of citizen JUST TO GET A QUICK VOTE.
"If you check, you will find that the Adam Wash Act was voted on behind closed doors."
Absolutely true, voted in under a suspension of the rules, a procedure the 109th Congress was quite adept at pursuing. Only one Democrat stood in opposition to 18 or so House members (including Mark Foley) who voted in the AWA).
I follow Nancy Grace as she was instrumental in the relay of the mis info Anon refers to, interviewing those with an agenda to get this monster passed.
So, she and others like her (including Chris Matthews most recent misstatement) do matter to RSOs. The continued feed to the public of misinformation only keeps states from reconsidering these laws...what is helping is the fact the AWA has received little funding and the states would save $$$ not implementing the sanctions as indicated by the laws.
I am really enjoying the distress of the Republicans in Congress, the feigned dismay over the Democratic majority when the GOP used every procedural trick in the book to pass their agenda.
Sad.
